December 18th Bargaining Update

Today we met again with the employer to negotiate.

We made a number of proposals on non-economic issues.

We again proposed reasonable limits on the employer’s practice of taking away bargaining unit positions by using agency and other subcontractors. These practices lower our bargaining power and ultimately hurt our wages and benefits.

We also rejected the employer’s proposal to sunset our current COVID safety accommodations for pregnant employees and those with unique health risks. In addition, we renewed our proposals for changes in the contract concerning medical leave, attendance, and fitness for duty tests.

We did not receive a response today to our proposal from yesterday on the issues of healthcare and wages.

Today we also reached tentative agreements on Articles 1, 9, and 17. These agreements involved secondary issues.

Our agreement on Article 1 updates our recognition language to reflect all of the locations that members currently work at in East Lansing, Okemos, Grand Ledge and Williamston.

Our agreement on Article 17 expands protections for those who willingly seek treatment for substance use and creates a generally more compassionate response for those of us who may suffer from a substance use disorder during our careers.

Our agreement on Article 9 updated the physical exam language for new hires. We also reached an agreement for the employer to withdraw its proposal to make changes to the types of personnel employed in the lab.

As a reminder, tentative agreements are not final until they are ratified by the membership as part of a wider agreement.

We are scheduled to bargain again with the employer tomorrow.

Want to get involved or have more questions? Come to our BAT (Bargaining Action Team) meeting tomorrow (Thursday) at Edmunds Pastime at 2010 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. Drop in between 6pm and 8:30pm. We’ll have updates PLUS food, yard signs and shirts!
